Lighting is the finishing touch that makes all the difference in a bathroom renovation. A good recessed LED bathroom spotlight must combine safety, practicality, and design. But when faced with a jungle of technical specs, it's easy to make a mistake. The wrong light fixture can ruin the atmosphere, pose a safety hazard, or simply fail prematurely when exposed to moisture.
As editorial experts, we're here to help you separate fact from fiction. Here are the classic mistakes to avoid and the essential criteria for a successful purchase.
To avoid falling into these traps, you just need to master a few key technical points. They are your guarantee of safety, longevity, and comfort for your bathroom lighting.
The NF C 15-100 standard is very clear: it divides the bathroom into several safety "zones." Each zone has a minimum IP (Ingress Protection) rating required for electrical fixtures.
Checking this criterion isn't an option—it's an obligation for your safety.
The atmosphere of your bathroom is largely defined by its lighting. Your best tool for sculpting it? Colour temperature, measured in Kelvin (K).
The gold standard? A dimmable LED spotlight. It allows you to adjust the light intensity to suit any time of day: a bright, crisp light in the morning to wake you up, and a subdued, soft atmosphere in the evening to unwind.
One last check before you confirm your purchase—these three technical points will save you a lot of headaches:
To help you see how these criteria apply in practice, here are a few options tailored to specific needs.
Our take: For tech lovers and those who want total control. This connected ceiling light lets you manage everything from your smartphone: intensity, colour temperature (from 2200K to 6500K), all with the maximum safety of an IP65 rating.
No more worrying about the "wrong vibe." With a single tap, switch from functional morning light to a spa-like atmosphere for the evening.
IP65 Rating: Install it worry-free in zone 1 (above the shower).
Smart Control: Total versatility via the Nordlux Smart app.
Our take: The Swiss Army knife for complex renovations. It checks all the boxes: extra-slim (29 mm), IP65 certified, dimmable, and even has a switch to choose between 3 colour temperatures before you clip it in.
It solves the headache of installation in low-clearance spaces while ensuring a perfect seal. Zero nasty surprises during assembly.
Ultra-Slim (29 mm): Fits anywhere, even in the thinnest false ceilings.
Versatile: IP65, dimmable, and 3 colour temperatures to choose from.
Our take: For those who want to adjust the mood without the complexity of smart home tech. The Moodmaker function is brilliant: choose between 3 light levels (100%, 50%, or night light) simply by flicking your existing wall switch.
It provides the flexibility of a dimmer without needing one! No app, no extra wiring. A simple and clever solution for changing the atmosphere.
Moodmaker Function: 3 light settings using a standard switch.

It's all about water resistance and location. An IP44 spotlight is splash-proof and suitable for areas away from water sources (known as "zone 2"). An IP65 spotlight, however, is completely protected against direct jets of water, making it the only type permitted above a shower or bath (in "zone 1"). The choice, therefore, depends on the exact spot where you plan to install it.
Even though a 230V spotlight connects without a transformer, working with electricity in a wet room is not something to be taken lightly. The NF C 15-100 standard is very strict. If you are not a seasoned DIYer with a solid understanding of electrics, our advice is unequivocal: hire a qualified electrician. It's the only way to guarantee a safe and compliant installation.
It depends on the room's size, ceiling height, and the power (in lumens) of your spotlights. As a rule of thumb, we recommend around 300 lux (lumens/m?) for general lighting, and up to 500 lux near the mirror. For a 5?m? bathroom, you would need a total of 1500 lumens. With 400-lumen spotlights, for example, 4 well-placed units will do the trick. Don't forget to supplement this with more direct lighting above the sink.
