Which households is it for?

Those preparing weekly portions

If you cook several dishes in advance, visible drawers or compartments make it easier to organise food by date, recipe or number of people. ADEME also recommends taking stock of what you already have to avoid buying duplicates.

Households building up a large reserve

Large batches, bulk purchases and portions planned for several weeks may justify a chest freezer if you have a dedicated space and are happy to add baskets, storage bins and labels to organise the contents.

Small kitchens without space for a second appliance

A fridge freezer can increase your available storage without installing a separate appliance, provided its freezer compartment genuinely matches the amount of food you store and the containers you use.

Buying priorities

Upright freezer

Consider it: if you want to see and regularly take out individual or family-sized portions.

Check: the height, depth with the door open and drawer dimensions against your containers.

Chest freezer

Consider it: for large batches and long-term storage in a space suitable for installation.

Plan for: storage bins or baskets to prevent portions being buried beneath recently added food.

Fridge freezer

Consider it: if you do not have room for a second appliance and use portions on a rolling basis.

Main limitation: only the freezer compartment’s net capacity counts, not the appliance’s total capacity.

Priority What to check Your needs
Finding portions easily Transparent drawers or separate compartments; compatible bins and baskets; door or temperature alarm, depending on the model. I want to find a recipe without moving all the other food. Organising portions by date or category helps me use them in rotation.
Usable capacity Net freezer capacity; drawer dimensions; external dimensions and door-opening direction. I compare the space reserved for frozen food with my maximum stock, taking the shape of my containers and bags into account.
Adding new dishes Fast-freezing function; freezing capacity in kg/24 h where stated; a setting that maintains -18 °C. When I store several prepared dishes at once, I check for functions suited to large batches and plan to freeze them before their use-by date. The French Ministry of Agriculture recommends -18 °C for freezers.
Maintenance and energy No Frost technology or a system that reduces frost; annual consumption in kWh/year; energy class and EPREL data for the exact model. I want to compare appliances with similar formats and capacities rather than relying on the energy class alone.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a combination appliance based on total capacity

A combination appliance may show a large overall capacity while offering considerably less space in the freezer. For example, Bosch states that the KGN36NWCK has 232 L of fridge capacity and 115 L of freezer capacity.

Count the portions stored at the same time and compare them with the freezer’s usable capacity and drawer dimensions.

  • Buying a large chest freezer without a storage plan

A chest freezer is well suited to storing large quantities, but portions become difficult to find when they pile up deep inside.

Plan bins by category or date, keep the oldest portions easy to reach, and measure the appliance’s external footprint before buying.

  • Freezing food too late

Freezing does not make a product usable once its use-by date has been reached or passed. The DGCCRF states that you should plan to freeze food as soon as you buy or prepare it.

Freeze dishes on the day they are prepared or before the applicable deadline, label them and keep the freezer at -18 °C.

Electricity consumption adds up over the appliance’s lifetime.

Brands mentioned for this need

Beko

Beko offers upright freezers with storage features and, depending on the model, a reversible door, drawers, an alarm or a fast-freezing function.

  • According to Beko, the B3RFNE274W offers 220 L, five drawers, an open-door alarm and a freezing capacity of 13 kg/24 h.
  • These specifications apply to this particular model and do not automatically apply to the entire range.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool sells chest freezers, upright freezers and combination appliances; the right choice mainly depends on the level of compartmentalisation and the storage capacity you need.

  • According to Whirlpool, the WHMFF6312W5E offers 286 L, No Frost, fast freezing, an alarm and a noise level of 34 dB.
  • Check the dimensions, availability and label data for the model you are actually considering.

Bosch

Bosch offers upright freezers and fridge freezers suited to kitchens where a vertical format or a single appliance is required.

  • Bosch states that the KGN36NWCK has a 115 L freezer compartment, No Frost and a noise level of 35 dB.
  • With a combination appliance, freezer capacity must be assessed separately from fridge capacity.

Liebherr

Liebherr offers chest freezers and combination appliances, with solutions such as SmartFrost and VarioSpace available on selected models.

  • According to Liebherr, the CFe 2500 Pure chest freezer offers 497 L, while VarioSpace allows certain drawers and shelves to be removed on the relevant models.
  • A large capacity does not replace the use of bins, labels and a portion inventory.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature should you aim for when storing frozen portions?

The French Ministry of Agriculture recommends setting the freezer to -18 °C. This temperature does not replace the need to follow packaging instructions, maintain the cold chain and comply with rules relating to use-by dates.

Can you freeze food that is close to or past its use-by date?

Do not freeze a product once its use-by date has been reached or passed. The DGCCRF recommends planning to freeze food as soon as you buy or prepare it; after opening, the use-by date is no longer valid.

How should you compare the energy performance of two appliances?

Compare annual consumption in kWh/year, the energy class, usable freezer capacity and noise levels for the exact model. EPREL, the European Commission’s database, lets you view energy and environmental data for models covered by the energy label in the European Union.

Is a freezer covered by the statutory guarantee of conformity?

Yes. When a private individual buys a freezer from a professional seller, the statutory guarantee of conformity applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods. The DGCCRF states that the seller is responsible for defects in conformity that existed when the goods were delivered.

Can a repairability index help you choose between two freezers?

Not necessarily: the categories listed by the French ministry responsible for ecological transition for the repairability index do not include freezers. Instead, compare the guarantee terms, technical documents, after-sales service and availability of spare parts for the model you are considering.
