Choosing athletic socks? A minor detail, you might think. Yet, the wrong pair is all it takes to turn a workout into an ordeal: blisters, discomfort, poor sweat management... the perfect recipe for ruining your efforts. Too many athletes still fall for empty marketing claims and end up with purchases they bitterly regret. Before you restock your drawer, let's review the classic mistakes to avoid so you can finally make the right choice.
Here are the three most common purchasing mistakes:
The composition is the number one criterion. For sports, forget all-cotton. Your best allies? Synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, and elastane.
Good cushioning is never uniform. To be effective, it must be strategically placed. Basketball socks or running socks, for example, will feature denser padding at the heel and forefoot—the areas most exposed to repeated impact.
Also, check for arch support. This comes in the form of a tighter band of fabric in the middle of the foot, which not only keeps the sock in place but also helps reduce fatigue during your training sessions.
Height is primarily a matter of preference and protection. Crew socks are a classic choice for many sports: they protect the ankle from shoe friction without covering too much of the leg.
The fit is absolutely crucial. A well-designed sock will always have a pre-shaped heel and a seamless toe to limit irritation. Finally, don't overlook the size: trust the manufacturer's guide. A model that's too large will bunch up, while one that's too small will compress your foot unnecessarily.

It all depends on the frequency of use, the intensity of your activities, and, of course, the quality of the materials. As a general rule, a good pair of men's athletic socks will retain its properties (elasticity, cushioning) for about a year with regular use. A good indicator that it's time for a replacement? When you feel a loss of elasticity, holes appear, or the cushioning feels "packed down."
It's not mandatory, but it is highly recommended for optimising performance and comfort. Basketball socks will focus on cushioning and ankle support, while running socks will prioritise lightness and breathability. For versatile gym workouts, training socks like the Nike models in our selection are an excellent compromise.
To preserve their elasticity and technical properties, wash them inside out at a low temperature (30°C / 86°F). Most importantly, do not use fabric softener: it clogs the technical fibres and cancels out their ability to wick away sweat. Opt for air-drying rather than using a tumble dryer, as the intense heat damages the elastane and significantly reduces their lifespan.
