Anyone unsure when they’ll be leaving
You need an appliance now, but might move out before a rental contract ends. The National Consumer Institute advises checking the terms for ending a contract early; these depend on the offer you choose.
For a temporary stay, compare renting, buying new and buying second-hand based on how long you’ll actually be there, after checking which appliances are already provided. Renting may include delivery, installation or repairs, but the commitment and end-of-contract terms vary by offer. If you buy, you’ll also need to consider transport and what you’ll do with the appliance when your stay ends. The National Consumer Institute recommends checking the contract length, cost, maintenance and cancellation terms.

You’re comparing the amounts payable during your stay, including any upfront payment and monthly rental instalments, with the purchase price and related costs. The National Consumer Institute advises looking at the costs and contract terms rather than focusing on the monthly payment alone.
You’re looking for delivery, installation or collection at the end of your stay. Check that the services included cover both the appliance and your address, as this varies by offer.

| What matters | What to check | Who it matters most to |
|---|---|---|
| Length of stay and moving out | Minimum rental period, cancellation terms and what happens to the appliance at the end of the contract. | If I’m unsure when I’ll be leaving, I want to avoid a commitment that outlasts my stay and understand the end-of-contract arrangements. Around 29% of consumers prioritise the contract length and moving-out terms. |
| Cost over the stay | Compare the upfront payment and monthly instalments with the purchase and delivery costs over the same dates; treat any potential resale separately. | When I need to keep to a budget, I compare all the expected costs during my stay, without treating a possible resale as a guaranteed saving. Around 29% of consumers prioritise the overall cost. |
| Delivery and collection | Address coverage, access to the property, installation and collection arrangements. | If I can’t transport a large appliance, I want straightforward delivery and collection, with services confirmed for my address. Around 24% of consumers prioritise logistics. |
| Breakdowns and maintenance | Who will deal with any issues, what is covered, and the terms for repairs or guarantees. | If a breakdown would leave the appliance unusable during my stay, I want to know who is responsible for arranging a repair and what it covers. Around 18% of consumers put maintenance and breakdown cover first. |
These figures may not cover the same period or include the same services. Buying may also mean arranging transport and reselling or moving the appliance when your stay ends.
Work out the costs for the dates you’ll be living there and compare like-for-like services. Treat any resale value as uncertain, not as a saving you’re guaranteed to make.
End-of-contract terms vary. HomeCycle says customers can stop or change their rental after 13 months under its Option Liberté; Airnest says an early cancellation fee applies.
Check the commitment period, earliest possible end date and terms that apply to the specific offer in writing.
