A kitchen without refrigeration or cooking facilities
If you’re missing refrigeration or cooking facilities, check what’s already provided before you buy. ADEME lists these appliance categories, while ANSES offers guidance on keeping food chilled.
After moving in, prioritise refrigeration if you don’t have it, followed by a cooking solution if there’s no suitable appliance for preparing meals. Then consider a washing machine, depending on the laundry facilities available, and a dishwasher if your needs, space and connections allow. Start by checking which appliances are already there to avoid buying duplicates.
If you’re missing refrigeration or cooking facilities, check what’s already provided before you buy. ADEME lists these appliance categories, while ANSES offers guidance on keeping food chilled.
If one essential function is already covered, fill the gaps without doubling up on an oven or freezer space. Decree No. 2015-981 sets out the furnishings required in a furnished rental, and ADEME recommends choosing an appliance capacity that matches your needs.
Compare the appliance dimensions with the available space and delivery route, then check the connections required. The guides from Bosch Électroménager France and Electrolux France recommend checking dimensions and pre-installation requirements; Enedis explains the connection requirements for an electric cooker.
The order depends on which appliances are already there, what you need straight away and which connections are available in your home.
| Priority | What to check before buying | Who is this for? |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping food fresh | Check that no working appliance is already provided, then measure the space and compare the fridge and freezer capacities separately. | If there’s no appliance to keep food fresh, I want to restore refrigeration without losing the space I need for fresh produce; around 36 % of consumers put this function first. |
| Preparing meals | Check whether an oven is already there, as well as the space and connection required for the hob or cooker you’re considering. | If there’s no way to cook, I want to prepare meals without buying a second oven; around 29 % of consumers prioritise this function. |
| Doing the laundry | Make sure there’s no practical alternative, then check the dimensions, water supply and waste outlet. | If I need to do laundry regularly and have no other practical option, I’m looking for an appliance that will fit the available space; around 21 % of consumers prioritise laundry. |
| Washing the dishes | Measure the space and check the installation type, capacity, water and electricity connections, and waste outlet. | Once the other functions are covered, I can consider a dishwasher if there’s enough space and the connections are suitable; around 14 % of consumers prioritise this function. |
A home may already have some refrigeration or cooking facilities. Buying without checking could leave you with an unnecessary duplicate.
Make a note of the appliances already there and check that they work before deciding what to buy first.
A duplicate appliance also takes up space that could be used for something you’re missing.
A stated width or the words ‘freestanding’ aren’t enough to confirm that an appliance will fit through the planned access route or into the available space.
Measure the recess, depth and delivery route, then check the connections against the instructions for the exact model.
The usable capacity should suit your usual loads. Consumption figures should be compared like for like, using consistent appliance types and units.
Compare figures from the same category and consider how often you’ll use the appliance before choosing its volume or capacity.
A capacity or footprint that doesn’t suit your needs can make everyday use more difficult.
A hob lets you cook on its rings, while a cooker can combine a hob and oven. An electric cooker also needs a suitable connection.
Check which functions are already provided and have the planned power supply checked against the model instructions before installation.
If there’s no usable oven, a hob on its own may mean you need another way to cook.
Bosch’s freestanding fridge-freezers and dishwashers offer options to compare by capacity and dimensions, depending on the space available.
The RCSA300K40WN fridge-freezer and FSE57300GX freestanding cooker suit different set-ups, depending on your space and whether you need an oven.
The freestanding BP 48SBL6-S washing machine and slimline CDPH 2D1047W-01 dishwasher give you a guide to capacity and dimensions for two different laundry needs.
The WSQ2160NE induction hob is worth considering if you have space for a hob and already have an oven or plan to install one separately.
Electrolux France’s pre-installation advice can help you prepare for the delivery of a large appliance.
The options below cover refrigeration, cooking, laundry and dishwashing. Choose according to the appliances already there, the space available and the connections in your home.

First, check your tenancy agreement, inventory and the appliances already provided. For a furnished rental, Decree No. 2015-981 requires, among other things, cooking hobs, an oven or microwave, and a fridge and freezer or a fridge with a freezer compartment. This list doesn’t mean that these appliances are included in an unfurnished rental; washing machines and dishwashers aren’t included either. Refer to the decree published on Légifrance and the guidance from ANIL.
For an electric cooker, check the model instructions against the existing installation: Enedis describes a connection using a 32 A socket or cable outlet. For a dishwasher, check the water supply, electricity supply, waste outlet and available space. Also ask what’s included in the installation service you choose.
ANSES recommends keeping the temperature between 0 and +4 °C in the coldest part of the fridge and checking it regularly, for example with a thermometer. Avoid overfilling the appliance so that cold air can circulate.
The legal guarantee of conformity applies, subject to its conditions, to new, second-hand or refurbished goods sold by a professional to a private individual. The Ministry of the Economy states that you have two years from delivery to request that it be applied; a commercial guarantee is separate.
The DGCCRF highlights the principle of free ‘one-for-one’ take-back of an equivalent used appliance when you buy a new one. Check with the retailer how collection works in practice, particularly if your new appliance is being delivered.
