Who is this advice for?

Tenants in unfurnished or partly equipped homes

Before buying, use your tenancy agreement to work out which appliances belong to you and which are provided with the property. If it’s a furnished rental, check the inventory too. If you plan to take your appliances with you when you leave, consider how easy they’ll be to remove and transport.

Households in smaller homes

Check that the appliance will fit through the access routes, into its allotted space and open without obstruction. Its capacity should suit your household too: choosing a smaller model won’t, by itself, make it practical for everyday use.

Households looking for appliances that will last

For appliances you use regularly, compare the specifications of individual models and, where applicable, their energy labels and repairability or durability scores. These details don’t replace the need to check that the appliance can be installed in your home.

What should you check before buying?

First, take stock of the functions and appliances already available. Once you’ve worked out what you need to buy, check the dimensions and connections to rule out models that won’t fit.

Priority What to check What matters to consumers
Missing functions Which appliances are already there and their condition; the signed inventory if the property is furnished. If I’m missing refrigeration or cooking facilities as soon as I move in, I want to fill that gap without buying an appliance that’s already provided. Around 33% of consumers prioritise this need.
Space and connections The dimensions of the space and access routes; the clearance and connections required for the model. An appliance won’t be any use to me if it won’t fit through the door or can’t be connected where I plan to use it. Around 27% of consumers prioritise this compatibility.
Portability in a rental Who owns the appliance, how it’s installed and whether it can be removed without altering any fixed fittings. If I might move again, I’d rather be able to take my appliance with me without relying on a fitted kitchen. Around 20% of consumers put this flexibility first.
How long you’ll use it and reuse The condition and accessories of a second-hand appliance; the energy label or relevant score for the model. I could reuse an appliance or consider buying second-hand, but I want to know its condition and the seller’s terms. For around 20% of consumers, how long an appliance will last and whether it can be reused come before other considerations.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying for a furnished rental without checking the inventory

According to ANIL and Service Public, a furnished property rented as a main residence must include, among other things, equipment for cooking and storing food. A detailed inventory is provided when the keys are handed over, so a rushed purchase could mean paying for something you already have.

Compare the appliances in the property with the signed inventory, and note their condition before placing an order.

You may also need to store or transport an appliance you’ve bought twice.

  • Assuming freestanding and integrated appliances are interchangeable

Beko’s dishwasher range includes freestanding, semi-integrated and fully integrated models. The type of cabinetry you have may therefore determine which style you need.

Check the installation type, dimensions, door-opening direction and connections before choosing a model.

An incompatible model may require a furniture door, extra accessories or professional installation.

  • Choosing based on a rating alone

Repairability and durability scores apply to specific product categories. A score won’t tell you whether an appliance will fit in your home, can be connected there or has the capacity you need.

Check how you’ll use it and whether it can be installed first, then compare scores where they apply to the models you’re considering.

  • Replacing an appliance supplied by your landlord without checking first

For a rental in France, ANIL and Service Public distinguish between routine maintenance and minor repairs, which are the tenant’s responsibility, and repairs needed because of fair wear and tear, which are the landlord’s responsibility.

Keep the inventory and details of the fault, then contact your landlord in writing before arranging to have the appliance removed or replaced.

Brands to consider by appliance type

Bosch

A brand to consider if you’re comparing several types of large appliances for your new home.

  • Bosch Électroménager France lists products including washing machines, fridges and ovens.
  • Check the dimensions, installation type and connections for each model individually; the range as a whole won’t necessarily suit your home.

Beko

A brand to consider if the dishwasher’s installation type is a key factor in your decision.

  • Beko France offers freestanding, semi-integrated and fully integrated models.
  • Check the capacity, dimensions and features of the exact model, even when comparing models of the same type.

Electrolux

A brand to consider for a range of appliance types, and if you need to find parts for a particular model.

  • Electrolux France lets you search for parts by identifying your appliance.
  • Check that a part is compatible and available for your specific product number.

Frequently asked questions

Which kitchen appliances are included in a furnished rental?

For a furnished property rented as a main residence in France, ANIL says it must include, among other things, a hob, an oven or microwave, a fridge and a freezer or freezer compartment. Before buying an appliance, check the list and condition of the appliances in the inventory provided with the tenancy agreement.

Who should deal with a breakdown of an appliance supplied with the property?

It depends on what caused the fault. According to ANIL and Service Public, the tenant is responsible for routine maintenance and minor repairs, while the landlord is responsible for repairs due to fair wear and tear. Report the fault and keep the inventory before deciding whether to replace the appliance.

Do all appliances have a repairability or durability score?

No. These scores don’t apply to every product category. According to the ministry responsible for France’s ecological transition, durability scores have applied to washing machines since April 2025, while repairability scores apply to products including dishwashers and vacuum cleaners. Check which score applies to the exact model, then check its dimensions and connections.

Is a second-hand or refurbished appliance a good choice after moving house?

Yes, if it provides a function you’re missing and you can check its condition and compatibility with your home. ADEME presents second-hand buying as a way to reuse products. Before you buy, check the model, that it works, which accessories are included and the seller’s terms.
