What should you prioritise?
When deciding between refrigeration, washing, drying and keeping your current appliance, start with how it’s used in your household. Then compare only appliances that perform the same function and have a suitable capacity.

| Identifying which appliance to prioritise |
Note how continuously your refrigeration appliances run, how often you use washing and drying cycles, and the condition of each appliance. ADEME offers an electricity-use simulator to help you assess these areas. |
When several appliances seem old, I want to know which one to look at before committing to a replacement. Around 33% of consumers put this first. |
| Comparing washing appliances |
For appliances in the same category and with a suitable capacity, check energy use per 100 cycles, water use per cycle and the duration of the reference programme. The European Commission provides these figures for washing machines, and ADEME also explains the figures for dishwashers. |
If I wash clothes frequently, I want the capacity and energy and water figures to suit my usual loads. This is the main concern for around 25% of consumers. |
| Assessing tumble drying |
Compare the tumble dryer’s capacity and energy label figures, then check its programme duration and maintenance requirements. The European Commission says a new label has applied to this category since July 2025. |
I use my tumble dryer regularly, so I want to compare its energy use without overlooking the time and maintenance it requires. Around 25% of consumers put this first. |
| Keeping or repairing an appliance |
Check whether the appliance still meets your needs and whether its fault can be repaired. For an eligible washing machine, the durability index presented by the DGCCRF can also help you compare models. |
If my appliance still suits my needs or can be repaired, I’d rather explore that option before replacing it. Around 17% of consumers put this decision first. |

Frequently asked questions
Is the energy label enough to decide whether to replace an appliance?
No. It helps you compare models, but it doesn’t prove that replacing your appliance will lower your bill. Also check that the function and capacity suit your needs. For washing machines, the European Commission says the label includes energy use per 100 cycles, water use per cycle, programme duration and noise level.
Is an old A+++ tumble dryer rating equivalent to a current A rating?
No. These letters belong to two different rating scales. The European Commission says a new energy label has applied to tumble dryers since July 2025. Use the figures for each model rather than treating the old and new ratings as equivalent.
Can the durability index help me choose a washing machine?
Yes. Where it applies to the household washing machine you’re considering, the index gives you another indication of its durability. The DGCCRF describes it as a comparison tool. Check whether an index and rating are available for the exact model, alongside its capacity and energy label.
Can I look into the Repair Bonus before replacing my appliance?
Yes, if the appliance and fault meet the scheme’s conditions. According to ecosystem, you should check that the appliance is owned by a household, was bought in France, is no longer under warranty and has an eligible fault. A QualiRépar repairer can assess your specific case.
How can I check that the energy label figures match the model being sold?
Check that the exact model number, category and capacity on the energy label match those of the product you’re considering. If the label has a QR code, it may link to EPREL, the European Commission’s public database of products covered by energy labelling.
