Who is this advice for?

Households with an older refrigeration appliance

A fridge or freezer runs continuously, as ADEME points out. If you’re considering replacing yours, compare the annual energy consumption of models of the same type, then check how much storage space you really need.

Households that run laundry cycles often

If you use your washing machine or dishwasher frequently, compare the energy-label figures with your usual loads and the number of cycles you run. Choosing the right capacity matters just as much as the energy-efficiency rating.

Households dealing with an appliance that isn’t working properly

Before ordering a replacement, check the manual, carry out the recommended maintenance and arrange a diagnosis if the problem persists. A suspected fault doesn’t necessarily mean the appliance needs replacing.

What should you check first?

Start with how the appliance works and how often you use it. Then compare only models that offer the capacity you need.

PriorityWhat to checkWhat I need
Appliance to assess For a fridge or freezer, check the kWh/year figure. For a washing machine or dishwasher, check the kWh per 100 cycles and take into account how many cycles you run. My refrigeration appliance runs continuously, or I run laundry cycles often. I want to know which appliance is worth comparing in more detail before buying anything.
Capacity Compare appliances that perform the same function. Depending on the category, check the storage volume of refrigeration compartments, washing-machine drum capacity in kg or the number of place settings. I want enough space to store my food or handle my usual loads, without choosing a capacity that’s mainly suited to occasional use.
Maintenance and repair Check the manual for the relevant maintenance advice, then arrange a diagnosis if the fault persists. When buying, look at the repairability or durability information that applies to the category. If the appliance still meets my needs, I’d rather understand what’s wrong before deciding whether to replace it.
Everyday use Check the noise level and, for laundry appliances, the water used per cycle and the duration of the reference programme. Also check the dimensions and installation requirements. An open-plan kitchen, cycles run at specific times or a tight space can all affect which model is right for me.

What should you avoid?

  • Relying on the energy rating alone

Appliances with different capacities won’t necessarily do the same job. Energy labels also show consumption on different bases: kWh/year for refrigeration appliances and kWh per 100 cycles for laundry appliances.

First compare appliances with the same function and a suitable capacity. Then check the other useful information on the label, such as storage volume, water use or noise level, depending on the category.

  • Choosing a capacity for occasional use

A large fridge or freezer, or a roomy drum, may not suit the quantities you usually store or wash. On the other hand, a capacity that’s too small could mean you need to run more cycles.

Work out what you need day to day before comparing the consumption of models with similar capacities.

  • Replacing an appliance before finding out what’s wrong

ADEME estimates that in France, one in two appliances taken to an after-sales service centre isn’t actually faulty. A filter that needs cleaning, limescale or the need to defrost the appliance could explain some problems.

Follow the manual for the checks and maintenance that are right for your appliance. If the problem persists, arrange a diagnosis before deciding between repair and replacement.

  • Confusing repairability with durability

These ratings don’t assess exactly the same criteria, and they don’t apply in the same way to every category. ADEME notes, for example, that the durability index takes reliability into account.

Check which index is shown for the category you’re looking at, and read the details behind the score when comparing two models.

Frequently asked questions

How should I compare two fridges or freezers?

Start by comparing appliances of the same type and with a capacity that suits your household. According to the European Commission, fridge and freezer labels show information including energy consumption, storage volumes and noise levels. The consumption figure is based on standardised conditions, so it doesn’t guarantee how much energy the appliance will use in your home.

Do the figures for a washing machine or dishwasher predict my energy bill?

No. The kWh per 100 cycles figure lets you compare models under reference conditions; it isn’t a prediction of your running costs. ADEME and the European Commission also recommend checking information relevant to each category, including capacity and water use per cycle. Your own usage will depend on how many cycles you run and which programmes you choose.

Which rating should I check for repairability or durability?

Check which rating applies to the appliance category, then look at the details behind the score. Don’t compare different ratings as if they measured the same thing. ADEME says that the durability index has applied to washing machines in France since April 2025; for a dishwasher, check the repairability information shown for the model.

Should I replace an appliance straight away if it isn’t working properly?

Not before checking the maintenance advice in the manual and finding out what’s causing the problem. ADEME estimates that in France, one in two appliances taken to an after-sales service centre isn’t actually faulty. If simple checks don’t solve the problem, a diagnosis can help you decide whether repair is possible or it’s worth considering a replacement.
