Priorities before equipping your home
First compare the actual length of your stay, the equipment already provided and the installation requirements. Only consider signing a contract or buying after completing these practical checks.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Avoid buying and transporting an appliance |
Minimum commitment; delivery and collection at your address; return conditions; whether or not you can keep the appliance at the end of the contract. |
I want quick access to a washing machine, fridge or dishwasher without arranging the resale or removal of a large appliance. |
| Keep an exit route open |
Minimum term; any potential initial payment; payment schedule; conditions and notice periods for early cancellation. |
My departure date may change: I want to understand the consequences of ending my stay earlier than planned before I commit. |
| Install the appliance without difficulty |
Dimensions; water inlet; drainage; electrical socket; delivery access; commissioning; exclusions for built-in models. |
In a small home, the appliance must fit into the room and work with the connections that are actually available. |
| Buy second-hand with protection |
Seller status; described condition; accessories; receipt; connections; applicable warranty terms. |
I am looking for an appliance to keep after my stay, with clear information about its condition and appropriate protection if a fault appears. |

Frequently asked questions
Must furnished accommodation already provide a fridge and cooking appliances?
Yes. Where it meets the legal definition of furnished accommodation covered by Decree No. 2015-981, the minimum furnishings include a hob, an oven or microwave, and either a fridge and freezer or a fridge with a compartment operating at -6 °C or below. This does not guarantee a washing machine, a particular capacity or working order: check the inventory and the check-in report.
What appliance rental periods are available in France?
Terms vary depending on the rental provider and contract. The French National Consumer Institute, together with the Banque de France, generally describes rentals over a defined period of 6 to 48 months; Orent advertises rentals of up to 36 months, while BUT states terms of 36, 48 or 60 months for appliances. So do not assume that an offer will automatically suit a stay lasting a few months.
What should you check before signing an appliance rental contract?
Check the commitment period, any potential initial payment, the payment schedule, delivery, commissioning, how breakdowns are handled, return arrangements and early-exit penalties. Boulanger Location states that the first payment includes the deposit and first monthly instalment; BUT specifies that an early exit may cost up to 40% of the remaining rent due.
Is a refurbished appliance better protected than a second-hand purchase from a private seller?
A refurbished product is a second-hand item that has undergone full functionality testing and, where necessary, been restored before sale. When a new, second-hand or refurbished appliance is sold by a professional to a private individual, the legal guarantee of conformity applies; it does not apply to a second-hand sale between private individuals.
What criteria should you use for an appliance you will keep after your stay?
Measure the space and access points before buying, then check the dimensions, connections, capacity, energy label and durability index where available. ADEME presents the energy label and durability index as useful reference points, complemented by checking compatibility with your home.
