Who are these options for?

Frequent small, crispy meals

You often cook small batches and want a golden finish without always switching on your full-size oven. To work out whether an air fryer is right for you, first check that your usual portions will fit in its cooking space.

People who use tins and compact dishes

Your quiches, gratins or pizzas need to fit flat, even when you’re only cooking a few portions. In that case, the internal dimensions and available height matter more than the advertised capacity in litres.

Households mindful of space and noise

In a small kitchen or open-plan room, a countertop appliance can get in the way or be disruptive when its fan is running. UFC-Que Choisir specifically recommends considering how noisy an air fryer is before buying.

What sets these appliances apart?

Air fryer

Worth considering: for frequent small batches, if your food and dishes fit in the basket.

Bear in mind: cooking capacity is limited, and the fan may be disruptive in an open-plan kitchen, as UFC-Que Choisir points out.

Mini oven

Worth considering: if you regularly use tins or dishes that are too wide for an air fryer basket when making small meals.

Bear in mind: a countertop appliance takes up space and must be positioned with the clearances specified in its manual.

Your existing oven

Keep it if: you also cook larger dishes or would rather not add another appliance to your worktop.

Consider: its large cavity may be worth bearing in mind if you often use it to cook just one small portion.

Criterion What to check Who is it for?
Energy use and speed Compare cooking tests for the same recipe and quantity, and check whether your portion fits in one batch. If I often cook just one small portion, I want to avoid switching on a full-size oven, without assuming that all compact appliances use the same amount of energy. Around 27% of consumers would prioritise energy use and speed.
Dish sizes and quantities Measure your tins and check the internal dimensions and available height, rather than relying only on the stated capacity in litres. My quiches or gratins need to fit flat and cook in the quantity I need. Dish compatibility would be the priority for around 27% of consumers.
Available space Measure the space and the clearances required in the manual; decide where the appliance will be used or stored. In a small kitchen, I don’t want to lose a food-preparation surface to another appliance. Around 20% of consumers would put keeping that space free first.
Cleaning Check which parts are removable and read the cleaning instructions for the model you’re considering. After a small meal, I want to be able to clean the parts I’ve used without it putting me off using the appliance every day. Around 13% of consumers would make ease of cleaning their main criterion.
Noise If possible, look for a noise measurement taken at a stated distance rather than trying to judge the sound level from a product listing. In an open-plan kitchen, I may hear the fan while cooking and want to know whether it will bother me. Noise would be the top criterion for around 13% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid before you buy

  • Assuming an air fryer will automatically replace your full-size oven

Its cooking space may limit the size of your dishes and the quantities you can cook. If your usual meals don’t fit in the basket, the appliance may end up supplementing your oven rather than replacing it.

Pick a few meals you cook regularly, measure the dishes or tins you use, and compare them with the appliance’s usable dimensions.

  • Assuming energy savings apply to every recipe

UFC-Que Choisir found that energy use varied depending on the food being cooked and the appliances tested. A result for a small quiche won’t predict how another recipe will perform.

Look for measurements that match the portions you cook regularly and use comparable quantities. The wattage alone doesn’t tell you how much energy an appliance will use during cooking.

  • Forgetting about ventilation and noise

An air fryer’s fan may be disruptive in an open-plan room. A countertop mini oven also needs to be positioned as directed in its manual; Groupe SEB’s safety instructions state that the countertop ovens covered by them are not designed to be built in.

Before buying, check the required clearances for the model you’re considering. If noise matters to you, look for a sound test too.

  • Confusing a commercial warranty with your statutory rights

In France, any commercial warranty is in addition to statutory guarantees; it doesn’t replace them, as the Ministry of the Economy points out.

Compare any extra services on offer, how long they last and what they exclude with the legal protection that applies to your purchase.

Brands to know when comparing models

These brands are examples of the three types of appliance. The dimensions and features mentioned apply to specific models, not to every product in each range.

Philips

Philips’ range includes the Series 2000 NA231/00 air fryer, which Philips France lists with a 6.2 L capacity.

  • The model number makes it easier to find the manual and specifications for that specific appliance.
  • Check the usable dimensions and noise level of the model you’re considering before comparing it with your oven.

Moulinex

Moulinex’s mini oven range includes different sizes, from the 15 L Uno OX130230 to the 39 L Delicio OX283810, according to the manufacturer’s product information.

  • Moulinex says the Uno OX130230 accommodates round dishes up to 28 cm and oval dishes up to 35 cm.
  • Check the size of dishes each model can accommodate, its functions and its cleaning instructions.

Bosch

The Bosch HBG579BS3F built-in oven is an example of using an oven that’s already installed rather than adding another countertop appliance.

  • Bosch lists a multi-level cooking function for this model.
  • This feature is specific to the model mentioned. Check which cooking modes are available on the oven in your home.

Air fryers available on Joybuy

These models are air fryer options for everyday meals. Their stated capacity alone won’t tell you how much of your food will cook properly in one batch. Compare the basket or container, the space you’ll need and the instructions for each model too.

Midea 2 L black air fryer

Midea Air Fryer 2 L, 1150 W, black

Worth considering if you cook small batches and want a 2 L basket. The product name lists a 60-minute timer, a non-stick basket and dishwasher-safe parts.

Check the external dimensions, noise level and recommended quantity per batch if these are important to your choice.

NINJA FN101EUGY Crispi air fryer

NINJA FN101EUGY Crispi Air Fryer

Worth a look if you’d like to use an air fryer for meals of different sizes. Before choosing this model, compare its containers with your usual portions and check how much room it needs.

If you have an open-plan kitchen, also look for a noise rating that reflects the conditions in which you’ll use it.

Cuisinart Compact Max AFS8OBLE 7.6 L air fryer

Cuisinart Compact Max AFS8OBLE, 7.6 L

Its stated 7.6 L capacity is worth comparing with the quantities you actually cook. A large capacity doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for very small batches.

Check the recommended quantities, external dimensions and noise level if you’re short on space or cook in an open-plan room.

KitchenCook AIRMED W 10 L air fryer

KitchenCook AIRMED W Air Fryer, stated capacity 10 L

If you’re considering cooking two different things for one meal, check how the baskets are arranged and how much food they can hold. The stated total capacity alone won’t tell you the usable portion size.

Also measure the space available and check the noise information before choosing this model for a small kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

Does an air fryer always use less energy than a mini oven or a conventional oven?

No. The difference depends on the recipe, quantity and appliances being compared. In tests of small dishes, UFC-Que Choisir generally found that the air fryers used less energy than the mini oven tested. However, results varied by recipe and model, so you can’t assume you’ll see the same difference at home.

How can I tell whether a mini oven will fit my dishes?

Measure your tins and compare their dimensions with the dish sizes accepted by the model you’re considering. Don’t rely on its capacity in litres alone. For example, Moulinex lists round dishes of up to 28 cm for the Uno OX130230 and 27 cm for the Principio OV125330.

Can you put a countertop mini oven in an alcove?

Follow the installation instructions for the model and don’t build it in if the manual says not to. Groupe SEB’s safety instructions for the countertop ovens they cover require air to circulate around the appliance. Check the exact clearances before deciding where to put it.

Does a commercial warranty replace statutory rights in France?

No. Any commercial warranty is in addition to statutory guarantees. For an appliance bought from a professional seller in France, the Ministry of the Economy says you can claim under the statutory guarantee of conformity for two years if the product is not as described or does not conform to the contract. Check the services and exclusions of any commercial warranty separately.
