Which format is right for you?

The number of people you’re cooking for is a useful starting point. The size of your dishes and how you put a meal together will help you decide which format to look at.

Families of four

If you mainly cook one family-sized dish, start by checking the size of a single cavity. UFC-Que Choisir recommends at least 6 L for four people, but that figure doesn’t guarantee that a particular dish will fit in the basket.

Households that cook two dishes at once

If you’re cooking a main course and a side dish with different cooking times, two independent zones let you set them separately. Check that the larger compartment can fit your main course.

Larger gatherings and fans of oven-cooked dishes

If your meals call for large tins, baking trays or several shelves, compare the internal dimensions of an air fryer with an oven-style design against those of your conventional oven before buying another appliance.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the largest dish you cook regularly. Then consider whether you need a second cooking zone and where you’ll be able to open the appliance.

What to consider What to check My needs
Usable capacity Compare the cavity’s width, height and shape with your food and dishes. UFC-Que Choisir recommends at least 6 L for four people and 9 L or more for households of five or more. Also check the load limit in the instruction manual. I want to cook enough portions without having to make several batches. A large overall capacity is of little use if my dish won’t fit in the available cavity.
Cooking zone layout A single basket gives you one zone; two drawers each have their own capacity. A removable divider may let you switch between two compartments and one large cavity, so check the dimensions in both configurations. If I often cook a main course and a side, I’ll check the size of the larger drawer. If I alternate between two dishes and one large dish, a flexible basket is worth considering.
Cooking at the same time Check for independent controls and, if you want to serve everything together, a synchronised finish function. UFC-Que Choisir notes that cooking results can vary between zones. I’d like to cook two foods with different cooking times without having to stagger the serving time, while still being able to adjust the settings for each zone.
Space in your kitchen Measure the space where you plan to put it, the clearance above it and the room needed to open the drawers or door. For stacked baskets, also check that you can reach the lower basket. My appliance needs to be easy to use without taking over the worktop or getting in the way of a cupboard door.
Large dishes and your oven Compare the dimensions of compatible trays, racks and dishes, as well as the number of usable shelves. A larger stated capacity doesn’t guarantee that a wide dish will fit. I regularly cook quiches, large dishes or several things at once. I’ll check whether an oven-style air fryer suits these uses, or whether my existing oven is still more practical.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing total capacity with space for a large dish

On a model with two drawers, their capacities add up, but they don’t create one large cavity. The word “XXL” on its own doesn’t tell you the usable shape or dimensions.

Compare the dimensions of each compartment and the foods listed in the instruction manual with the dishes you usually cook.

  • Choosing two drawers just for the synchronised finish

This function can make two cooking cycles finish at the same time, but it won’t make the drawer for your main course any larger.

First decide which food will go in the larger drawer, then check its capacity and shape before looking at the programmes.

  • Forgetting to allow room to open it

An appliance may fit on your worktop but still be awkward to use if a drawer or door can’t open freely.

Measure the space you have and the clearance needed, then compare them with the dimensions of your chosen model.

  • Planning to replace your oven for every meal

Large dishes, baking trays and cooking on several shelves may be more than an air fryer’s cavity can handle.

Keep your oven as your main appliance if you often cook these meals. Consider an air fryer for a different purpose that its dimensions can genuinely accommodate.

Brands and ranges to compare

Moulinex

The range includes the Easy Fry Dual XXL with two drawers and the oven-style Easy Fry 20 L. They offer two different ways to cook a family meal.

  • According to Moulinex, the Easy Fry Dual XXL’s 11 L capacity is split between a 6,5 L drawer and a 4,5 L drawer.
  • For the Easy Fry 20 L and the model with drawers, check the internal dimensions and the space the appliance needs in your kitchen rather than comparing the stated capacities alone.

Philips

The NA154/00 with a flexible basket and the NA462/70R1 with stacked baskets show two ways to arrange cooking zones.

  • According to Philips, the divider in the NA154/00 lets you switch between two 3,55 L compartments and one 7,1 L cavity. The NA462/70R1 has two stacked 5 L baskets.
  • When using the compartments separately, check the size of each one. For the stacked model, also measure the available height and the space needed to access the baskets.

Ninja

Ninja is one of the air fryer brands included in UFC-Que Choisir’s product comparisons.

  • UFC-Que Choisir reports mixed results across the models it tested, from a range of brands. Look at the specific Ninja model, its drawers and dimensions rather than assuming that one appliance’s features apply to the whole brand.

Dual-zone air fryers on Joybuy

These models have two separate drawers, baskets or chambers, making them suitable for meals with two dishes. For one large dish, compare the size of each zone with your dish: the total capacity doesn’t create one large cavity.

Frequently asked questions

What capacity air fryer should I get for four people?

UFC-Que Choisir recommends at least 6 L for a family of four. Also check the basket’s width, height and shape, as well as the recommended load in the instruction manual: capacity alone doesn’t guarantee that you can cook a whole meal in one batch.

Are two drawers enough to cook a whole meal?

Two drawers let you set each zone separately and, if the model has the feature, synchronise the end of cooking. They may not be suitable for a large main course, so check the capacity of each drawer rather than just adding their capacities together. UFC-Que Choisir also notes that results can vary between zones.

Can a family-sized air fryer replace an oven?

Not for every meal. A conventional oven is still worth considering for large dishes, baking trays or cooking on several shelves if they won’t fit in the air fryer’s cavity. Before planning to replace your oven, compare the internal dimensions of the appliance with the dishes you usually cook.

Does an air fryer always use less energy than an oven?

No. It depends on the meal and the appliances being compared. In tests published in October 2024, UFC-Que Choisir measured average electricity consumption that was 36 % lower for the air fryers it tested than for a mini oven when cooking the same quantity of small quiche lorraine. This result doesn’t apply to every oven or to large family meals.

What should I do if my air fryer is recalled?

Check the affected brand, model and batch on RappelConso, then follow the instructions on the recall notice. For a SYMEX 6,5 L air fryer recalled in France in March 2026 because of electrical and fire risks, RappelConso asked customers, among other things, to stop using it. The recall doesn’t apply to all air fryers.
