Finding the perfect tool to bring an idea to life can quickly become a challenge. Whether you're dreaming of personalising a mug, decorating a pebble from the beach, or customising that trusty old denim jacket, choosing the right acrylic paint marker is crucial. Faced with a jungle of options, tip types, and coverage claims, it's easy to get lost.
This guide is here to shed some light. As the Head of Product Recommendations at Joybuy, my mission is simple: to give you concrete, objective advice for choosing the tools that will truly match your ambitions, free from marketing jargon.
Before diving into our selection, here are a few key points to consider to help guide your choice.
The marker's tip, also known as the "nib," sets the tone for your linework.
A good acrylic marker must offer rich, opaque colour capable of covering both light and dark surfaces. Its versatility is its greatest asset. Make sure it is a multi-surface paint marker, compatible with the materials you plan to use: paper, card, wood, metal, plastic, glass, stone, or even fabric. This is an essential criterion for any customisation project.
Water-based acrylic ink is the most common, and for good reason. It's virtually odourless and cleans up easily with water as long as it's not dry. Once dry, it becomes water-resistant and lightfast, ensuring the longevity of your creations. A quality permanent colour marker will thus retain the vibrancy of its pigments over time.

Most acrylic paint markers, especially those with a pump system, need to be primed. Shake the marker vigorously (with the cap on!) to mix the pigments thoroughly. Then, on a piece of scrap paper, gently pump the tip several times until the ink fully saturates it. Your marker is ready to use!
On porous surfaces (paper, card, raw wood, etc.), acrylic ink is indeed permanent once dry. On smooth, non-porous surfaces like glass, ceramic, or plastic, the ink adheres very well but can be susceptible to scratching. For a foolproof hold on these materials, applying a clear protective varnish after the ink has fully dried is highly recommended.
Absolutely! An acrylic marker is an excellent option for customising textiles like cotton or denim. To make your design wash-resistant, it's crucial to set the colour. After the ink has completely dried (allow 24 hours), iron the fabric on the reverse side, without steam, protecting your design with a sheet of parchment paper. In all cases, always follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
