What should you compare before buying ?
Start with the size of the loads you actually wash. Then compare machines that can handle them with your available space and the programmes you use most.
10–12 kg front-loader
Worth considering : if you regularly wash large loads; UFC-Que Choisir identifies this capacity range as suitable when laundry builds up quickly.
Trade-off : a large drum that’s rarely full may not suit your needs, and the maximum capacity doesn’t apply to every programme.
8–9 kg front-loader
Worth considering : if you wash frequently but usually do smaller, separate loads; UFC-Que Choisir considers this capacity generally sufficient for a household of 3–4 people.
Trade-off : check that your usual bulky loads will fit, and that load adjustment is documented for the exact model you’re considering.
Top-loader
Worth considering : if the available width rules out a front-loader; Darty describes top-loaders as narrower machines that are loaded from above.
Trade-off : they generally have a more limited capacity; UFC-Que Choisir’s report states that the top-loaders it considered do not exceed 8 kg.
| Factor | What to check | Think about your needs |
| Usable capacity |
Compare the kilograms of dry laundry listed for the reference programme with the maximum loads for your other programmes in the manual. Also measure the machine’s depth and the space needed to open it. |
I often wash bedding and towels together: the load limits for the programmes I use matter more than the headline capacity alone. |
| Smaller loads |
Check whether the model specifies load detection or adjustment. Compare the energy-label figures of machines suited to the amount of laundry you wash. |
I often sort my laundry into small loads; a larger capacity is only useful if I regularly have larger loads to wash. |
| Water and energy |
Check the kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle on the energy label, along with the duration of the reference programme. Compare machines based on the same expected use. |
Because I wash frequently, I want to compare the stated energy and water use without assuming that a larger drum will automatically be more efficient. |
| Spin performance and noise |
Check the spin-drying class and noise information on the label. If an independent test of the exact model is available, look at its spin results and noise level too. |
The machine will be close to the living areas, so spin noise and how damp the laundry is at the end of a cycle will influence my choice. |
| Use and maintenance |
Check access to the filter, the manual and the stated durability index. UFC-Que Choisir’s tests assess factors including washing, rinsing, cycle duration, energy and water use, noise and ease of use. |
When I’m doing load after load, I’d rather have easy access to the parts that need maintenance and be able to compare test results for the exact model. |
Which branded models can you use as a guide ?
These specifications apply to the models listed, not every appliance from each brand. They don’t replace comparing the programmes and test results for the model you choose.
Bosch
Bosch Électroménager France lists the WGH254A0FR front-loader with a maximum capacity of 10 kg and a maximum spin speed of 1 400 rpm.
- A 10 kg model worth considering if you regularly wash large loads.
- Capacity and spin speed alone don’t tell you about this model’s rinsing performance, noise or cycle duration.
LG
LG France lists the F14R31WHSA front-loader as having a capacity of 11 kg and dimensions of 600 × 850 × 565 mm. The brand also mentions load detection on this model.
- The product specifications make it possible to check whether the capacity and dimensions suit your space.
- Load detection alone doesn’t prove that the machine will use less in real-world conditions.
Samsung
Samsung France lists the WW11BGA046AEEF with a capacity of 11 kg and dimensions of 600 × 850 × 600 mm.
- These dimensions give you a starting point for checking how much space you have.
- Allow space to open the door too; the brand’s technology claims don’t replace a test of the exact model.
AEG
AEG France lists the LTA6K7230B top-loader at 7 kg and says its ProSense function adjusts the cycle to the load.
- This top-loader is worth considering if limited width means you need a machine that loads from above.
- Its 7 kg capacity isn’t comparable with that of a 10–12 kg front-loader; the stated adjustment feature doesn’t prove measured savings for your loads.
Large-capacity front-loaders on Joybuy
These front-loading washing machines have a capacity of 10 or 11 kg and are worth considering if you regularly wash large loads. Before choosing, compare the load limits for your usual programmes, the relevant energy label and the space the machine will take up.

LG F4WX851Y, 11 kg
Its stated capacity of 11 kg makes it suitable for households that regularly wash large loads. Before buying, check its dimensions, the clearance needed to open the door, the load limits for each programme and the spin noise level for your chosen location.

Electrolux EWF1410N2, 10 kg
This 10 kg front-loader is worth considering if you regularly wash bulky items. Its name mentions Steam Anti-Allergy, TimeSave and an Inverter motor, but these names don’t establish how well it washes. Check the load limits for each programme, the installation requirements and the energy label that applies to the model sold in France.

Candy BR 411BL9-S, 11 kg
With a stated capacity of 11 kg, this front-loader is aimed at households with frequent large loads, rather than simply a high number of wash cycles. Its name indicates an A energy rating; also check the depth, space needed to open the door, spin noise and load limits for the programmes you use.

AEG LFR62E114S, 10 kg
Its stated capacity of 10 kg makes it worth considering for regularly large loads. The model name indicates a 1 400 rpm spin speed and an A energy rating; measure your space carefully and compare energy and water use, as well as programme load limits, on the label and in the manual.

Frequently asked questions
What do the kilogram figures on a washing machine mean ?
They refer to the stated maximum capacity for dry laundry, not the permitted load for every programme. UFC-Que Choisir says that the capacity shown on the labels of recent models relates to the Eco 40-60 reference programme; check the manual for synthetics, wool and delicate fabrics.
Will a 10–12 kg model necessarily use less energy and water ?
No: this capacity is most relevant if you regularly wash large loads, as UFC-Que Choisir points out. To compare machines that suit your laundry needs, check the kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle on the energy label, then look at the load-adjustment features of the exact model.
What should you compare on the energy label ?
ADEME recommends checking the information on water and energy use, spin performance and noise. Compare these figures across washing machines that can handle your usual loads and fit in the available space.
Is a top-loader suitable for a household that does a lot of washing ?
It may be suitable if limited width means you need a narrower machine, but check its capacity against your usual loads and make sure there’s space to open the lid. UFC-Que Choisir’s report states that the top-loaders it considered do not exceed 8 kg, so they aren’t a direct replacement for a 10–12 kg front-loader if you regularly wash very large loads.
Should you check the durability index in France ?
Yes, if it’s displayed for the models you’re comparing. France’s Ministry for Ecological Transition says the durability index is gradually replacing the repairability index for washing machines from 8 April 2025; consider it alongside the other details for each model, including how easy it is to access parts for maintenance.
