Who could benefit from a larger capacity?

Households with laundry baskets that are often full

Loads are washed one after another, and cottons, towels or bedding regularly fill the drum. UFC-Que Choisir says that a capacity of 10–12 kg may be worth considering in this situation, but it should still match the size of your usual loads.

Households that often wash duvets and throws

The need is for bulky items washed at home, not simply more everyday laundry. For each model you’re considering, check the manual for the load limit of the suitable programme, then make sure you have enough space to install the machine.

Households with occasional bulky items

A duvet may be an occasional large load, while everyday washes are still small or sorted by fabric type. ADEME recommends choosing a capacity to suit your actual usage: compare a smaller machine before opting for a drum that’s rarely full.

How do you choose between capacities?

Start with the loads you wash most often, then check how the machine handles bulky textiles. As UFC-Que Choisir points out, the stated capacity in kilograms of dry laundry doesn’t apply equally to every programme.

8–9 kg capacity

Consider this if: bulky items are occasional and your usual loads generally fit within this capacity.

Bear in mind: you may still need separate cycles if you regularly have large loads.

10–12 kg capacity

Consider this if: you wash one load after another and regularly have large loads of cottons, sheets or towels.

Bear in mind: the extra capacity won’t guarantee lower energy use when the drum is only partly full.

Extra-large capacity or a programme designed for duvets

Consider this if: you regularly wash thick duvets and throws, and the manual confirms the relevant items are suitable.

Bear in mind: a larger drum doesn’t remove the need to follow the programme’s specific load limits.

What matters What to check Who this matters to
Cycles for large loads Compare the capacity in kilograms of dry laundry with your regular loads, and check the stated duration of the Eco 40-60 programme. When my laundry baskets fill up quickly, I’m looking for a capacity that means I don’t regularly have to split a large load across several cycles. Around 31% of consumers would make this a priority.
Duvets and other bulky items Check the maximum load for the programme intended for the item and follow the instructions in the manual. Also make sure it will fit through the drum opening. If I often wash duvets or throws at home, I need to be able to load the item without exceeding the programme limit. This would be a priority for around 25% of consumers.
Mostly small loads Match the capacity to your usual cycles. Compare the kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle stated for Eco 40-60, without assuming these figures apply to every programme. I often sort my laundry by fabric type and run small loads, so I don’t want to choose a large drum just for a few bulky items. Around 19% of consumers would prioritise a capacity that suits their everyday loads.
Space and installation Measure the alcove, delivery route, depth including connections, and the clearance in front of the door. I may need a large capacity without having enough room for just any front-loading machine. Around 13% of consumers would put fitting the machine into their home first.
Spin performance and noise Check the spin-drying efficiency class, as well as the noise level and noise class during spinning. If thick laundry takes a long time to dry or the machine will be near living areas, I’m looking for a balance between spin performance and noise. This would be the top priority for around 12% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Assuming a larger drum will save cycles and energy

A larger capacity only helps you combine laundry if you regularly have large loads. UFC-Que Choisir and ADEME recommend taking partly filled drums into account, rather than assuming that a larger capacity alone will save energy.

For a few weeks, keep a note of the types of loads you wash, then compare capacities that suit your routine.

A drum that’s often underfilled may use more water and electricity than is appropriate for the way you use it.

  • Assuming the stated capacity applies to every programme

The permitted load varies by fabric and cycle. In an example published by UFC-Que Choisir, a machine rated at 8 kg has lower load limits for synthetics, jeans and wool.

If you have a particular duvet or throw in mind, check the load table and programme instructions in the model’s manual.

  • Measuring only the space where the machine will go

A front-loading washing machine may fit into an alcove, but you’ll also need to account for the connections, opening the door and getting the machine into the room.

Check the appliance dimensions, and measure the doorways, delivery route and clearance needed in front of the door.

  • Comparing only the energy rating

The rating doesn’t tell you everything about cycle duration or spin noise. The figures on the energy label relate to the Eco 40-60 reference programme, not every cycle you run.

For your shortlisted models, also compare kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco 40-60 duration, noise and the durability index applicable in France.

Brands to consider

These ranges give you some useful points of comparison. Base your choice on the product listing and manual for the exact model, rather than assuming a feature applies to an entire brand.

Bosch

A range of front-loading washing machines to consider if you’re comparing standard capacities with a 9 kg model featured by Bosch Electroménager France.

  • The range includes front-loading models with different capacities.
  • Check the capacity, dimensions and warranty terms for the model you choose. A motor warranty doesn’t prove overall reliability or confirm that the machine is suitable for washing a duvet.

Electrolux

A range to consider when comparing 10 kg front-loading washing machines, particularly if the machine’s depth is important for your installation.

  • Electrolux France features 10 kg models, with details to check on each product listing.
  • A cycle-adjustment feature advertised by the brand doesn’t tell you how much every programme or load will use.

LG

A brand to consider if regularly large loads have you comparing 11 kg front-loading models.

  • LG France describes the F14X56WHST as an 11 kg model with cycles adapted to the weight and fabric of the load.
  • This description doesn’t confirm that a particular duvet is suitable: check the relevant programme’s limits in the manual.

Samsung

A range to browse when comparing 11 kg front-loading washing machines and the features of each model.

  • Samsung France features a number of 11 kg models with Auto Dose.
  • Don’t assume that a model’s features, accessories or load limits apply to other machines in the range.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 10 or 11 kg washing machine handle that load on every programme?

No: the stated capacity doesn’t apply to every programme. UFC-Que Choisir points out that the maximum load may be lower for synthetics, jeans, wool and other textiles. Check the manual’s load table before choosing a machine for a duvet.

How do you compare the energy use of two large-capacity washing machines?

Compare the kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle and Eco 40-60 duration stated for the exact models. According to the European Commission, the Eco 40-60 programme’s reference figures take different load sizes into account. They don’t predict the energy use of every small load you wash or of a quick programme.

How can the durability index help you choose a washing machine in France?

It gives you an additional point of comparison, separate from capacity and washing performance. The French Ministry of the Economy states that the durability index has applied to front-loading and top-loading washing machines since 8 April 2025. Check the index for your chosen model alongside its energy label and dimensions.

What maintenance should you plan for if you wash frequently?

First, follow the maintenance instructions in your model’s manual. UFC-Que Choisir recommends regularly cleaning the filter, detergent drawer and drawer compartment. Adjust the amount of detergent to the size and soiling of the load, as well as the water hardness.
